The pairing process or “building rapport” is a topic that I love teaching to others. For teachers and other school professionals, it is a quick and effortless way to gain instructional control; however, it is a concept that parents can utilize as well.
Day-to-day life can be stressful. Parents balance the struggle of having to maintain order within their households with having fun and making memories.
If you start feeling as though you are stuck in a cycle of managing challenging behaviors, it is important to engage in a little pairing session with your child. The pairing process is a great way to re-establish yourself as a reinforcer. Remind your child that you are “the giver of good things.”
In summary, pairing gives you a chance to be a kid, by playing side by side and making silly noises with your child.
Plus, it is a great feeling when you realize that your child or student is willing to comply with demands because YOU have become their preferred reinforcer.
