Did you know that visual analysis skills are a mus Did you know that visual analysis skills are a must-have for behavior analysts?

The ability to visually analyze a graph is the foundation of all data-based decision making.

Increasing or decreasing trends show us whether an intervention is working, if a stimulus is reinforcing, or if a change needs to be made.

Ideally, visually analyzing a graph should be comparable to reading a story about a period of time in someone's life. Sounds easy enough, right?

Unfortunately, research indicates that we might not all be reading the same story when we look at the same graph (DeProspero & Cohen, 1979; Ottenbacher, 1990; Park et al., 1990). Maybe we aren't as good at visual analysis as we first thought?

Luckily, my friend @allie3985 has decided to research a method for addressing this problem through quantitative methods. Let's help her decide if math and statistics is the solution we didn't know we needed.

If you are interested in participating, you can find the link in my profile.

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing i “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.” -Bruce Lee

I am a life-long learner. I love reading, researching and data analysis. But did you know the greatest impact comes when you apply the things you’ve learned?

Hence why I chose APPLY as my 2021 word of the year. My goal is to take all the information I’ve learned over the last few years and consolidate it into useful actionable steps!

I have some amazing things coming and I can’t wait to share them with you all!

Well, it only took me a week into 2021 to decide o Well, it only took me a week into 2021 to decide on my #wordoftheyear.

⭐️APPLY ⭐️

You may be thinking, "hmm, that's an interesting choice." But, hear me out. The word APPLY means "to bring to action, especially for some practical purpose." Additionally, it appears in a behavior context, as well. In the field of ABA, APPLIED means using the principles of behavior for socially significant behavior change.

Over the last few months, I have been learning everything I can about developing systems and cohesive plans for the content I create. Now it's time to put all those ideas into action by APPLYING those concepts.

I have a stockpile of ideas that I am in the process of organizing, and I can't wait to share them with you!

While you wait, drop me a comment ⬇️ and let me know what behavior topics or visuals you'd like to see in the coming months?

In typical procrastinator format, I am finally get In typical procrastinator format, I am finally getting around to wrapping up 2020, before leaping head first into the new year.

This past year was long and difficult, and I don’t think anyone is sad to see it come to an end...

...however it wasn’t ALL bad.
_______________________________________

Confession: I always struggle with deciding what to share on this account. Infographics and behavior tips are the easy part, but its all the other stuff that trips me up. That being said, personal connections are so important, especially right now. Often people forget that there is a sole BCBA (rather than a team of professionals) behind this little account.

I am constantly working on balancing the type of content I share and one of my goals for the new year is to make the connections with my community a top priority.

Therefore, I figured sharing my favorite memory from 2020 was a perfect way to start!

I can’t wait to kick off 2021 tomorrow by telling you the word I chose for next year. But in the meantime, let’s wrap up 2020 together. Share the BEST thing that happened to you last year in the comments below.

Did you know that PRAISE is one of the easiest (an Did you know that PRAISE is one of the easiest (and cheapest) reinforcers that you can keep in your toolbox?

⭐️ It is often highly DESIRED.

And best of all...

One key aspect when delivering praise is to ensure that it is "behavior-specific." Simply put, the statement is directed toward a specific individual, contains a positive identifier, and describes the observed behavior.

Let me explain why this is important. When someone says, "good job today," it may give you a nice feeling inside, BUT it also can potentially leave you feeling confused, thinking, "what thing from my day was the good job referring to?"

Instead, if someone were to say, "Dana, you did a great job during the IEP meeting today. You validated the parent's concerns and presented a well thought out plan of action." This statement is positively reinforcing, AND it identifies what I did well, both of which increase the likelihood that I will do that same thing again in the future.

Don't forget praise should be delivered four times more often than a corrective statement.

Challenge yourself to give some BEHAVIOR SPECIFIC PRAISE to a loved one today!

Do you have an elf on the shelf at your house this Do you have an elf on the shelf at your house this holiday season?

In the last few weeks parents everywhere are scrambling to bring a little elf magic back into their homes, while simultaneously trying to think up new mischievous scenarios on a nightly basis. But what if I told you there was a better way to leverage your elf?

Use your magical little helper to “catch your kids being good” (rather than focusing on the naughty behavior) and instead give lots of attention to behaviors that you’d like to see happening more often.

Tomorrow, I will give you the “magical” equation for giving effective behavior-specific praise!

Want to read more about using your elf to deliver praise? Check out the blog post I wrote on this topic a couple years ago. You can also grab these printable notecards via the links at the bottom of the post.

Reinforcement vs. bribery was one of the first top Reinforcement vs. bribery was one of the first topics I tackled on this page, and I figured it was probably time to revisit it.

The main difference between the two is that a bribe is reactive and is given in response to challenging behavior, where as positive reinforcement is pre-planned and is given for a job well done.

While the differences between the two concepts are seemingly minor, the timing of the presentation is everything!

A bribe might stop the behavior but it also teaches your child that challenging behavior results in a reward - “If you stop crying, we can go get ice cream.” Rather than teaching them that good behavior results in a reward - “When your room is clean, we will go out for ice cream.”

Swipe ➡️ to see my original infographic on this topic.

Don’t forget you can grab the printable version of the reinforcement vs bribery visual from the resource library on my website. Simply click the link in my bio to access the password.

Have you ever taught a new skill? Did the learner Have you ever taught a new skill? Did the learner initially need help to demonstrate that skill?

If so, you likely provided them with a PROMPT.

A prompt is a type of assistance that, when given, increases the likelihood of a correct response. Prompts come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. There are physical prompts, verbal prompts, and visual prompts. Still, confused? Don't worry! I have an infographic on this topic coming soon.

However, the key to teaching a new skill (given a prompt) lies in the FADING plan. If the learner forever needs your help to complete the task, they won't independently demonstrate or generalize that skill. Fading ensures that the skill transfers from being adult-centered to child-centered. Therefore, as you create your initial skill acquisition plan, make sure to add fading prompts to the list.

Note: some individuals will always need a visual cue to complete a task. A cue is different than a prompt in that it functions as a signal (or hint) but does not lead the learner to the direct response.

This week over on my Instagram page I posted a 6-part series all about the ABCs of Behavior. It is important to not only observe the behaviors that a person demonstrates, but also the factors that trigger and maintain those behaviors. Another important aspect of this three-term contingency is data collection. Without objective and measurable data, it is difficult to hypothesize the reasons why certain behaviors are occurring. I compiled all the information from the ABCs of Behavior series and posted it on my blog. I even included a pretty cool tip for digital ABC data collection! Head on over to my blog to read more and grab a PDF version of this free infographic from my resource library. I’ll link to the post in the comments below. ... See MoreSee Less

Teachers,This is inevitably going to be one of the most challenging years of your career. Whether you have been in education for 20 years or are fresh out of college, all of us feel like first-year teachers. For some, that means integrating technology in ways we never thought possible, and for others, it means finding ways to engage students from behind a mask and 6+ feet away. As a BCBA in a public school system, I not only hear those same challenges but am living them myself. I see the hard work and dedication, know the feelings of confusion, chaos, and am working alongside you to try to make each day a little bit easier. Last week I decided I wanted to create a few different posters, cue cards, and visuals for some of my students. I tried to think of things that could be used among many different grade levels and student populations; sets that could be used as a stand-alone resource, or combined with others based on a student's needs. I ended up creating 7 different resources from seated movement break cards to distance greeting ideas and everything in between. (I'll post a link in the comments if you'd like to check them out.) Don't get discouraged as you adapt to the seemingly endless phases and changes to your educational plan this year. Remember that we are all in this together and reach out if you need anything! 💜 Dana ... See MoreSee Less
